Together with Futurice, we helped Alma Media improve the search functionality on their website. A more sophisticated search engine creates a solid foundation for more advanced search functionalities while enhancing user experience.

THE PROBLEM WORTH SOLVING

Alma Media, an internationally operating digital media, marketplace, and digital services provider, had challenges with the search functionality on their website. This was particularly the case with article searches and the internal search engine, which was based on basic keyword matching. Frequent underperformance with especially multi-word queries resulted in suboptimal search outcomes.

Upgrading to a more sophisticated search engine was necessary to improve the overall functionality and efficiency.

OUR SOLUTION

Together with the client team and Futurice, we launched a test-driven initiative to enhance search functionality by evaluating various embedding and querying methods. These methods were thoroughly assessed before being developed into a suite of scalable microservices.

Designed for use in a production-like environment, the microservices continuously process and update new articles as they are added to the system, ensuring robust and efficient search capabilities. The result is a solid foundation for more advanced search functionalities, which helps to enhance the user experience and overall search efficiency.
